The OLIN Milk Yarn Scarf is hand-loomed by a weaving cooperative in West Bengal, India.
Milk yarn is a unique fiber that transforms casein, the protein found in milk, into a soft, durable yarn suitable for textiles. Originally developed in the 1930s as an alternative to wool, milk yarn was created by isolating casein from skimmed milk. Through a specialized process, casein proteins are spun into fibers that are surprisingly strong and have a smooth, almost silky feel.
This process requires significantly less water than traditional textile manufacturing and reuses what would otherwise be waste material from milk production, adding to its eco-friendly appeal. Milk yarn has recently seen a resurgence due to its renewable origins and luxurious texture, often compared to cashmere in its softness.
